Thigh-Highs

Absolutely dreadful quality, but you get the idea.

I have been wanting thigh high boots since the fall shows, but being a college student, couldn't spend the right amount of money for a decent pair. Also, it's not like I'll be wearing them for years to come. So I found these on GoJane, and am in love. I can't wait for it to get cooler out so I can wear them.

I moved into FIT last weekend and am in love with everything here at school and around it. I didn't take a single picture during move in, but my room is on the fifth floor overlooking the street {AND I got the window side of the room!}. There are even trees right outside my window which I'm sure will be beautiful during fall.

Tomorrow I'll be making my first trip to Brooklyn to the botanical gardens, so I hope the rain that is supposed to fall doesn't.

{Plastic} Waste, Day 3

I apologize for the lack of photos today...I got a bit lazy, and fortunately there was not as much to photograph.

Day 3:

Breakfast at Starbucks: A plastic "Naked" drink cup {but the smallest one!}, paper food wrapper
Lunch at Quiznos: Sandwich wrapped in paper, paper/plastic drink cup

Snack: Glass Starbucks Frappaciuno container
Dinner: Paper Napkin

I move in to school tomorrow and could not be more excited/nervous. I feel like such a tourist right now, as we are staying in Newark, NJ for the night -- but I can see the Empire State building all lit up!

What I have learned from this experience: planning really does pay off. If we all took more reusable bottles, and filled them up with water at each rest stop, we could have decreased our extraneous drink consumption {and calorie intake!}. We also could have opted out of using straws {what's the need?}, carried around a cloth napkin, and made more food ourselves to bring on the road or in our hotel rooms. I also would have preferred to eat at more family-owned restaurants, but I was not the one paying for the food...

Also, making more of a point to find recycling destinations is key. As I have learned, hotels don't care. 99 % of the time, they are clueless.

I encourage you to take the time to plan before your next road trip, even one thing like remembering your reusable bottles. Water is water, and free water at a clean rest stop is much better than $1.99 water at a gross gas station.

{Plastic} Waste, Day 2

Today was spent driving through the rest of TN, Kentucky, and finally Ohio. And my waste generated seems just as bad, if not worse, than yesterday. Blast you Styrofoam!

Day 2:
Breakfast at the hotel: I ruined my first waffle {the mixture for it came in a Styrofoam cup with plastic lid} and burned a plastic fork trying to get it off the griddle. So this is my second plastic fork, a Styrofoam plate, and a Styrofoam cup for my juice.

Lunch at Subway: I opted for a salad in a big plastic bowl, but did tell the woman working I did not need the plastic lid. I also used a plastic fork {which came in plastic wrapper} and plastic water cup, for which I used no straw or plastic top. Also, note the plastic chip bag.

Coffee at Starbucks: Plastic lid, cardboard cup.

Dinner at Chipotle: I did not take a picture of it, but my burrito came in a foil & paper wrapper and paper bag -- no plastic used. I got a Nantucket Nectar to drink, which comes in a glass bottle. Yay no plastic with dinner!

I am sure there are other odds and ends I used, but forgot about. This is turning out to be a very depressing realization...I know the alternative to all of this would take a lot of prior preparation, but it might just be worth it for future road trips.

As for a previous comment from Chelsea, as long as you look at see what number is in the little recycling triangle symbol on the bottom of a container and it says #1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 7, it is usually recyclable. It differs town to town...in my town in Texas, for example, the city did not recycle #6, you just have to check the town's website to see what they do accept. And make sure you wash it out!

Also, Beth was kind enough to let me write a guest post on her blog, Fake Plastic Fish! Please check it out :)

{Plastic} Waste, Day 1

Well, my parents and I left for New York City this morning and made it to Tennessee, passing through Arkansas along the way. We also made a quick stop at Graceland...which is not as big as I remembered.

Anyways, I have to decided to blog about my waste consumption {primarily plastic} throughout this whole trip. The idea started with when I called each of the hotels we would be staying at and asked them if they recycled -- I figured that for a 3 day car ride, no doubt some glass, plastic, and paper waste would occur. Turns out, none of them do. One of the managers I spoke to {the hotel I'm in right now}, didn't even know what recycling was.

This is more of just an eye-opening experience for me than anything else. This is not including my parents' waste, just mine, but that will be more than enough as I can already tell from today. Hopefully I can use this experience when I write to these hotels, asking them to consider offering recycling, and why they don't already.

Day 1:Breakfast at Sonic: Plastic maple syrup cup, plastic-coated french toast stick holder, 1 paper napkin, Styrofoam cup, straw. Why I got a medium drink, I have no idea -- I never get more than a small, and a medium means more waste anyways.

We brought sandwiches from home for lunch, but they were wrapped in plastic wrap. I started to drink an iced tea in a glass container, and ate a plastic cup of pineapple chunks.

For dinner, we ate at a restaurant, but I used a straw in my water, 2 tea bag wrappers, and a paper napkin. I used this plastic-coated cup the hotel provides to take some medicine with including 2 Benedryl chews that come in individual plastic wrappers.

And this is just day one.

Dino Jacket

I have fallen for this jacket by new designer, Erna Einarsdóttir, who recently showed her graduate collection at Lichting 2009 in Amsterdam. Part stegosaurus, part badass.

In other news...I'm going to be in CT until August 4th visiting Aaron and my bests!
